African Caravan

Along with an introduction to the geography and sociology of West Africa, the ensemble will share with older students the dances of two of Africa’s greatest empires, Ghana and Mali. Centers of world trade from 235 AD to 1500 AD, these empires controlled world trade routes, which included the cities of Cairo, Tunis, and Timbuktu.

Grades: 3–5, 6–8
Fee: $469, $714 double performance
Availability: Tuesday and Wednesday mornings
Special Requirements: Wood floor or stage (35' x 35' preferred); dressing area; PA system with five microphones on boom stands; large world map (or map of Africa); area should be clean and clear of students 30 minutes before performance. Note: If a wood floor is not available, program content is adjusted for lower impact dance styles.

African Playground

Engage younger students in the games, dances, and music of Senegal, Nigeria, Guinea, and Ghana as they discover the role these activities play in the everyday lives of African children.

Brasilcultura, the Power of Celebration

NEW! Creative Teamwork: the Choreographer and the Composer

Choreographer Jennifer Owen and Composer Brad Cox highlight the keys to successful collaboration in this unique program. Performing original music and dance works, they will guide students through the creative process. After learning some basic dance steps, students will participate in creating a new dance piece, directing how the music and dance are put together.

 

Grades: K-5

Size: 150 students maximum

Availability: Thursdays & Fridays

Requirements: Piano (in tune) or electric keyboard; large, open space suitable for students to move (gym or cafeteria preferred).

Experience India

Performance and lecture give insight into the culture and traditions of India. Samarpita Bajpai explains the structure and history of Indian classical dance form, performs dances from two major styles, and answers questions. Each dance is preceded by a short narration to illuminate the meaning and cultural context of the dance.

Grades: 3–5, 6–8, 9–12
Fee: $237, $388 double performance
Availability: Tuesday –Friday until 2:30pm
Special Requirements: Prefer hardwood stage at least 20' x 20'; no carpets; one microphone with stand; sound system with cassette/CD player; projector and room that can be darkened; stage area cleared 15 minutes prior to performance.

Freedom of Speech

This powerful, thought-provoking dance and music performance illustrates historical and current facets of freedom of speech.  Kacico Dance brings this topic to life with spoken word, vivid movement, and clever choreography in sections titled “The First Amendment”, “Surveillance”, “The Gag Rule” and more.  A lively Q&A will conclude the program.

Inside Dance

940 dance company will weave together performance and lecture to bring students inside the choreographic process. This fun and stimulating presentation demonstrates how choreographers make use of choreographic structures (i.e., theme and variation) to communicate specific ideas. The program emphasizes critical thinking skills that both choreographers and active viewers of dance use when observing a dance performance.

Grades: 6–8, 9–12

Simple Machines

By City In Motion Dance Theatre

A vibrant trio of professional dance artists will perform original dance pieces based on the theme of simple machines. Students will observe dancers using shapes and movement motifs inspired by wheels, gears, pulleys, levers, wedges, and inclined planes. This program is especially effective when paired with the dance workshop Simple Machines: Bodies at Work.

Grades: 1–3
Fee: $353, $527 double performance
Availability: Tuesday afternoons and Fridays, October - May
Special Requirements: Minimum 24' x 30' stage or gym space, wood floor preferred; area and floor surface clean and clear of students 30 minutes before performance.

Word Dance

Text is put into motion!  From spelling and grammar to poetry and literature, Word Dance puts text into motion by looking at the power of both words and dance to communicate ideas and images. Beginning with letters, dancers build words, including compound words, a palindrome, action words (and more!); then the dancers use movement to show how words are used in poetry and stories. Students have the opportunity to create a movement improvisation built on their own words!

 

Grades: 2–5
Fee: $375, $580 double performance
Availability: Thursdays and Fridays

Special Requirements: Preferred 25' x 30' wood floor; floor swept, mopped, and allowed to dry at least one hour before performance; nearby dressing room and/or bathroom; electrical outlet.
