Sing, Sing a Song

 

The perfect music class for the young vocalist. Melanie Melcher uses voice and simple percussion instruments to explore melody, rhythm and vocal technique. Learn how to create a story with your voice in a fun, musical environment. This class can also serve as a precursor to our popular "Children's Chorus."

Children’s Chorus

 

This choir is designed to create a lively atmosphere for choral training for children ages 8-12 who love to sing. Paula Winans, Director of Education and Children's Chorus Master for the Lyric Opera of Kansas City, directs this beginning choir.

Ensemble Percussion

 

Students will learn technique and repertoire of Latin music and modern variants from Cuba, with some Western influence. Instruments (provided) used include conga drums, bata drums, cajones (wooden boxes), kata, claves, shekere and cowbells. Students will also learn songs in Spanish.

Garage Band

 

You will have the opportunity to play, collaborate, and create with others in a 'garage' rock band format. Every member will have the chance to try out the various instruments and roles: electric guitar, keyboard, and vocals. Through experimentation and practice, the group will create its own unique sound.

NEW! Bebop to Hip Hop

 

Jazz laid the foundation for all forms of modern American music, including hip hop. Students will learn the basics of writing spoken word poetry and its relationship to both jazz and hip hop. Students will write their own lyrics and learn how to create beats using a drum machine. A field trip to the American Jazz Museum is also included.

NEW! Popular Songwriting

 

For the budding songwriter, the course will teach the music theory needed to write popular songs and lyrics. The class will analyze popular songs from Gershwin through the Beatles to the present day. Each new songwriter will present his/her original composition in a workshop environment. Prerequisite: students must be able to sight-read.
