Jazz laid the foundation for all forms of modern American music, including hip hop. Students will learn the basics of writing spoken word poetry and its relationship to both jazz and hip hop. Students will write their own lyrics and learn how to create beats using a drum machine. A field trip to the American Jazz Museum is also included.

For the budding songwriter, the course will teach the music theory needed to write popular songs and lyrics. The class will analyze popular songs from Gershwin through the Beatles to the present day.
