Creating With Words

Use your imagination to brainstorm and create your own stories with the help of a professional writer. You will have the opportunity to work with visiting storytellers, poets, and actors to develop your creativity. Prerequisite: Students must know and be able to write the alphabet, but do not have to know how to read.

Writing Workshop

Are you working on an independent writing project? Do you just love to create? Perhaps you are even considering being an author when you grow up! We'll encourage each other in our writing, discuss techniques of our favorite authors and the details of modern publishing, such as graphic novels and podcasts. We'll even try our hand at creating a group writing project. Dedication to writing is what matters in this class, not your age. Prerequisite: Instructor approval.

Playwriting - Your Words on Stage

How much fun would it be to see and hear your words spoken and acted on stage? Well, first you have to write it so they can. Learn how to write the story, so it can be acted out on stage. Learn what's important to write, so the actor, director, costumer, set and lighting designer, know how to set your story on stage!

NEW! Chronicles of the Creative Process

This new journalism class for high school students will chronicle the young artists and performers of the Community School of the Arts. In the Chronicles class, students will develop their own writing style through literacy skills building, interviewing and evaluating CSA artists, and their works will be published in a new online journal to be posted at kcya.org. This class will teach communication skills like verbal expression and critical thinking as well as professional writing styles.
