Arts for Living & Learning Luncheon

Kansas City Young Audiences (KCYA) Annual Arts for Living and Learning Luncheon was held on Thursday, May 22, 2008 at 11:30am at the InterContinental Kansas City on the Plaza.  The luncheon featured performances by KCYA teaching artists and presentation of our annual awards.

The Lighton Prize for teaching excellence was awarded to Lisa Henry, professional Jazz Singer and KCYA teaching artist.  Ms. Henry was the first runner up in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Vocal Competition and performs internationally.

The Distinguished Educator Award was presented to Martha Thompson, Director of Humanities for the Kansas City Missouri School District.  Mrs. Thompson works dilligently to assure that all students in the District receive high-quality arts programs as a part of their education.

The Trudy Award, created to honor a community arts advocate and volunteer, was presented to Joan Berkley for her tireless work to support the arts in Kansas City.  Among many civic contributions, Ms. Berkley has served the Kansas City Friends of Alvin Ailey Camp Committee for more than twenty years.

Once again, local artist Tom Corbin has created a special edition bronze, Young Actress, and is donating a portion of the proceeds to support the Kansas City Young Audiences mission.  The Young Actress statuette, the second sculpture in the series, is available for purchase at $400.

A very limited number of the first piece in the series, Young Dancer, are also available.

A one-of-a-kind life-sized statue was auctioned to the highest bidder, a Seattle area arts collector, at the special Patron's Party held on May, 20, 2008.

The luncheon was chaired by Christopher Mounts.   Luncheon committee members include Lina Dickinson, Pam Gradinger, Anita Maltbia, Lynne Melcher, Heidi Nast, and Guy Townsend.
